What to do with an old MacBook laptop

Consider what you want to do with your old MacBook

Does the MacBook still work?

If the MacBook still works, you can choose to upgrade its hardware. This is a great cost-effective way to breathe new life into an old laptop. Sometimes you only need to upgrade a small part of the laptop just for it to work like new again.

If that’s not the case and the MacBook doesn’t work nor turn on at all, you can consider getting it repaired, upgraded, or recycled. It all just depends on what you’d like to do with it.

Repair and upgrade costs

The repair costs of each MacBook can differ. If you only need the hard drive replaced, or you want to put more RAM in, it shouldn’t cost a lot. What you can definitely be sure is, these repairs or upgrade costs won’t cost more than buying a new MacBook laptop.

A new entry-level MacBook Pro costs at least $2000, but if you just put in some useful upgrades to an old MacBook, you might be able to get great performance from it. This is only the case for Mac users who use their laptops for basic stuff like internet browsing and general word processing. If you do more than like, say things like graphics or video editing, then repairing or upgrading this old MacBook would probably be not that useful for yourself. Still, you could get a bit of cash if you upgrade and resell the Mac.

If you don’t want to go through all this hassle, you might as well trade the MacBook in at a computer repair shop. Most computer repair shops do this, so they can refurbish and resell the laptop, or they’ll just take it in for spare parts.

person using MacBook laptop to browse photos online

So now you have a few options for your old MacBook: upgrade it for better performance, repair or upgrade to resell it, or recycle the laptop as e-waste. Before you do anything to the Mac, you might want to check the MacBook with Apple Diagnostics, to test for any possible hardware faults. Backing up any important data would also be helpful. You might not be able to do much if the Mac doesn’t turn on or boot up properly, but you could still try it out.

Apple Diagnostics

As a simple hardware testing tool, Apple Diagnostics can help you quickly review your Mac’s hardware. So you can be aware of anything you need to fix up. Sometimes even if the Mac turns on and seems to work well, something could be wrong with it and you might not even be aware of it. It’ll only take a few moments, and could also inform your decision on what you want to do with the Mac.

To start Apple Diagnostics, restart your Mac and press the “D” key to trigger it. After a language selection page, it should automatically start testing your hardware. The test will look into hardware such as the hard drive, battery, and RAM. Any problems found will be reported with some support solutions.

Backing up data

Whether you’re upgrading the MacBook for yourself or to resell, or simply throwing it out, backing up the data on the hard drive is an important step. It’s also a great computing habit to keep, for any of your devices.

You can choose from an external hard drive, or just put it all up in the cloud. This keeps your data safe, and makes the upgrade process much smoother as you won’t have to worry about data loss or recovery.

Useful upgrades to boost your MacBook’s performance

Replacing the hard drive with flash storage

Flash storage, also known as a solid-state drive (SSD), is pretty much the standard on new MacBook models these days. They are much faster and more durable than traditional hard drives (HDD). Performance wise, flash storage can get you speeds up to 16x faster than an HDD.

Replacing a hard drive with flash storage is one of the easier computer repair jobs, so much so that you can even do it yourself. Older MacBooks are often more repair-friendly than the newer ones, so you should manage just fine. Remember to choose a flash storage model that is compatible with macOS, or else the drive might not work.

Adding more RAM for better multitasking functions

RAM memory chips on motherboard

RAM (Random-access memory) is essential for even computing performance. Information that you need while you’re working is stored temporarily on the RAM, so it is readily available whenever you need it.

These days for most computer users, the minimum required amount of RAM is 4GB. It should get you through basic computing tasks. The recommended amount of RAM for a relatively smoother experience is at least 8GB.

Adding more RAM to an old Mac could also give you a better performance, for multitasking purposes. So this option could also be a way to refresh your old Mac. Just make sure that your RAM isn’t embedded on the logic board. If that is the case, you might not be able to add RAM capacity to your Mac. You can check this by opening up the Mac and look for where the memory chips are set.

Battery replacement

The battery pack on a MacBook doesn’t have an effect on its performance, but a battery replacement could be beneficial to the Mac’s lifespan.

Laptop batteries can be charged over and over without losing their capacity, but they are still a consumable part. Once it reaches more than 400 charging cycles, the battery can start to fail. It may lose charge, or carry no charge at all. In some more serious cases, these lithium-ion batteries can become extremely volatile and leak hazardous liquid or catch on fire.

So you might want to check the Mac’s battery status to see whether it needs a replacement. You can check this by going to System information, and clicking the battery tab. There you can find the battery charging cycle count. If your Mac’s battery needs replacing, it should show you a warning saying “service battery”, “replace soon”, or “replace now”. Either way, getting a battery replacement for your old MacBook can add to its lifespan substantially.

Recycling or trading in your old MacBook

If you don’t really need the Mac anymore and want to get rid of the clutter in your house, you could consider recycling the laptop as e-waste. Alternatively, you could also trade in at a computer repair shop.

In Australia, e-waste can be recycled for free. Check with your local council to see when the next e-waste drop off days are. Or you can also book a free pick-up service for any of your unwanted electronics. This includes laptops, desktops, and household appliances.

Trading in a laptop at a store could also be an option if you don’t want to go through the trouble of having to list your laptop online yourself. Computer repair shops like us are able to take in old computers for refurbishment or for its spare parts. If you just want to get rid of the Mac quickly and possibly get some cash out of it, then trading in at a computer repair shop is your best bet.

Before you recycle or trade in your old MacBook, make sure you take out the hard drive, or destroy it. That way there’s no chance that others can access your data. Simply take out the hard drive and give it a few whacks with a hammer. Then you can make sure that it’s completely safe to say goodbye to the Mac.

HP computer repairs 101

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is an American multinational company that has been making computers, laptops and other electronic for 80+ years.

Without a doubt, HP computers are popular and amongst the best in the market. Many HP computers are well built and reliable. But, they are not immune to breakdowns.

I’ll show you what problems HP computers commonly have, how & where you can get it repaired, plus what you can do first yourself, what manufacturers can and cannot help you with.

First, let’s get to know a bit more about Hewlett-Packard (HP) computers.

Is HP computer good?

Yes. But, not in the best 3 in my opinion.

There is no denying that HP is one of the biggest computer PC makers in the world, for a long time, competing with other big names: Dell, Apple, Lenovo, ASUS etc.

HP has been in business since 1939. If you’ve bought yourself a HP computer, you can be assured that it is a respectable brand.

In 2014, HP was planning to get out of PC and printer businesses due to the rise of tablets, low-cost PC makers in Asia, and the rise of Apple.

Then, in 2011, they announced that they’d keep their PC business.

Today you’ll still find many HP computers, laptops in major retailers like JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Harvey Norman. HP still make fairly decent computers in my opinion.

Performance-wise, HP offers a wide range of computers, laptops with different specifications, at different prices to suit every budget. You can also customise specs online on HP website to purchase directly.

How HP computers compare to Dell, Lenovo, Apple and other PCs

Having seen thousands of computers, PCs, my opinion is that HP still competes well with Dell, Lenovo. These manufacturers are better than Acer, ASUS. However, Acer and ASUS are priced better.

Apple has its own operating system (macOS), while HP computers mainly run on Windows OS. Thus, I won’t compare HP to Apple here. But, it’s generally regarded that Apple is more “premium” than HP.

Like Dell and Lenovo PC, HP offers a number of series in their computers.

For home and personal use, HP offers Pavilion, OMEN, Essential, Envy, Spectre series.

For business, HP offers EliteDesk, ProDesk, Workstations, ProBook, EliteBook, Elite DragonFly, ZBook, Chromebook.

HP Pavilion, Envy, Spectre computers are quite popular in Australia for home. Though, reliability amongst these computers (and other home, personal HP computers) is inconsistent.

When I said “inconsistent”, I mean it could last anywhere from 2 to 4 years before a repairs is needed. I’ve seen some of these HP computer models work well for 4 years, while some barely lasted 2 years then it was brought in for repairs.

HP ProDesk, EliteDesk computers are good, reliable and popular for businesses. HP ProBook, EliteBook are reasonably solid and reliable, but not the in the top.

At higher price point, HP Workstations computers are very solid, well built and reliable.

HP ProDesk, EliteDesk are quite reliable and excellent for work and business purposes. I generally recommended these computers to my clients along with Dell or Lenovo business-grade computers (namely Dell OptiPlex, Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkCentre).

I might add Dell Vostro to this recommended list as well (for business use), but Dell Vostro isn’t as solid as Dell OptiPlex or Dell Precision. Dell Vostro might make this list (just) in my opinion.

With the right specifications, these business-grade computers can perform well for 3 to 5 years. They still need repairs and maintenance after that, which is unavoidable given the facts that technology advances quickly every year.

But, you can be assured that a repairs on HP ProDesk, EliteDesk is well worth it and it will keep going for a few more years.

If I need to buy a Windows computer for myself, I’d go for Dell or Lenovo first. Having said that, I’d definitely consider HP computers too.

However, this also depends on the purpose of the computer that I need to buy (home or business), and what budget I have.

For example, though you may fancy the idea of having a solid, reliable computer, but if your budget doesn’t allow you to purchase a HP ProDesk or EliteDesk then you may have to compromise and opt for HP Pavilion instead, which is less reliable.

Is HP PC computer reliable?

This varies depending on series, models.

HP Pavilion, Envy, OMEN, Essential, Spectre are for home and personal use. Their reliability is inconsistent.

These computer series could last 2 to 4 years, sometime to 5+ years before a repairs is needed.

At higher prices, business-series HP computers, HP EliteBook, ProBook etc as I mentioned above are more reliable.

Still, business-grade HP computers will have problems after 3-5 years and need to be repaired.

HP Workstations computers are solid, reliable and could last even longer.

How you use your computer also affects its lifespan. If you’re computer for everyday basic use (email, word processing, internet surfing, watching videos), your computer will last slightly longer provided that you look after it well.

If you play games and often push the computer to its limit, it will more likely break sooner than later.

Think about your car, if you take it to drag racing every weekend, it will need servicing more often. Same thing applies to your computer.

Specifications, models of your computer also affect its lifespan. For example, many computers with solid state drive (SSD) will perform faster and last longer than ones with traditional standard hard drive (HDD).

Another thing to keep in mind is that, I’m referring to HP PC, computers, laptops that you use for home, school, or work. The term “PC” refers to “personal computer”.

Some HP computers are made for commercial use, such as HP ProLiant server computers. These computers are commercial-grade, not personal computers, hence they are built for 24 hour operation, 365 days a year.

These commercial-grade computers are remarkably reliable and have longer lifespan. But this is out of the scope of this post.

What problems HP PC computers commonly have

All HP PC computers will eventually break down after 3 to 5 years and need repairs.

why computer breaks and need repairs

Below is problems that HP computers may have, even though you have done nothing wrong to it:

  • HP computer does not turn on at all.
  • Freezing problem. Not responding. Not opening apps. Not responsive.
  • Very slow, taking a long time to start up and to open apps, documents.
  • An error message shows “No bootable device” at startup.
  • Smart failure predicted on hard drive warning at startup.
  • Laptop does not charge. The light where the charge plugs remains off.
  • Damages near hinge area, at the lower corner of the screen. This could lead to metal hinge pushing the front glass screen out.No, your ex-girlfriend didn’t drop your laptop, ask her to come back! It wasn’t her fault. I’ve seen this issues in many HP laptops.

broken hinge HP laptop repairs

  • Computer turns on and hangs on the HP splash screen (POST screen).
  • Turns on to a loading screen and never finishes loading. The spinning wheel goes on forever.
  • PC boots to startup-repair mode but none of the options will boot to Windows.

  • Loud noise from fan. The fan makes clunky, or scratching noise.
  • Wireless in laptop does not work. It does not detect any wireless network in the area or unable to connect to any WiFi network.
  • Battery in laptop does not hold charge for long. It may only last for minutes, or suddenly turns off even though it has some charge left.
  • Battery in HP laptop has stopped working completely. The laptop needs to be plugged in with its charger to work. If you unplug the charger, the laptop turns off immediately.
  • Battery in HP laptop shows a cross sign in its status.

Other than that, your HP computer may break down because of accidents such as drop, water liquid spill, power surge etc.

  • Impact damages such as drop, knock.
  • Cracked screen due to drop, knock, or an object was left on keyboard while you close the screen.
  • Water liquid spill damage on HP laptops, or desktop HP computer (less common).
  • Virus spyware problem.
  • Power outage, power surge causing laptop not turning on.
  • Overheating problem, laptop computer gets really hot and may turn off itself. This is caused by dust clogging fan and heatsink inside the computer.

Though we mainly do PC repairs, I’ve had commercial-grade HP computers in for repairs and have repaired a number of them, namely HP ProLiant servers.

Repairs on HP servers are not as common due to the facts that they last longer than a typical home PC computer.

Why HP computers break down

If your HP computer has virus, you will see obvious signs. For example, random unwanted popups that won’t go away, constant warnings of virus, you get redirected to unwanted web pages.

You may have opened a wrong file, or email attachment that contained viruses on your computer that led to the virus getting in the laptop.

Your antivirus software may not have picked up the virus. Having an antivirus does not guarantee your computer will be virus-free. It’s like police fighting criminals, there will always be criminals.

Most virus issues happen inside Windows. Your computer would boot to Windows and the above virus symptoms show up.

Other reasons are hardware fault / failure.

Hardware faults include: hard drive, motherboard, RAM, video card failure, worn-out battery, etc.

There is no single reason for computers to break down. It is often difficult to trace back to find the exact cause of the issue.

Below is common causes for HP computers to break:

  • Age of the computer: After 3 to 4 years, parts inside your computers would have worn out and due for repairs or replacement.
  • Manufacturing problems: human errors can happen in production line that lead to unexpected component failure later on.
  • Computer user error such as knock, drop, water liquid spill as mentioned above. Sometimes this may happen without your knowledge.
  • Humidity: Wet weather could be the blame for your laptop problems. Moisture in the air can short components inside computers.
  • Overheating problems: every HP computer has a cooling fan inside. Clogged dust, rust over the years causes overheating problem which lead to component failure.
  • “Planned obsolescence”: similar to the light bulb conspiracy, and it’s necessary in technology. You can read more about planned obsolescence of tech on BBC.
  • Power outage power surge: A storm, lightning strike in the area can kill your computer. Power board with surge protector is inadequate to prevent this from happening.
  • Consumable parts: every battery is a consumable part. HP computer batteries are expected to last 2 to 4 years and they degrade over time. This is perfectly normal.
  • Third-party manufacturer’s errors: HP cannot manufacture everything. Many parts are actually manufactured by third-party manufacturers. These manufacturers may have had errors in their production line. For example, graphics card in HP computers are manufactured by Intel, AMD or nVidia.
  • Bugs: I’m referring to real bugs and insects here. Cockroaches could have gone inside your laptops and caused troubles.

What you can try first yourself to fix the problem

There are basic troubleshooting that you can try first before sending your computer to repairs.

If it’s software problem such as virus, we will show you how to fix it below.

If it’s hardware problem, check your warranty cover first. Your computer might be covered by warranty from your supplier. Standard warranty for new computers is 1 or 2 years. You may have purchased extended warranty.

If any of these applies, contact your place or purchase. This is your best option. The repairs will be Free.

If the damage is caused by your own wrong-doing such as drop, water spill damages, it’s not covered by warranty.

Your insurance may cover this though. Some insurance policies cover accidental damages. Go through your insurance policy to find out.

Other than that, DIY repairs or paying for professional computer repairers will be your options.

It is recommended to always have backup of your data before any repair is attempted. Data loss may occur during any computer repair process.

If your HP computer still work partially, take your chance to back up data now.

How to test, diagnose HP PC computers

How do I know if it’s software or hardware issue?

For most, there is an easy way to tell the difference between software and hardware issue.

Most software issues, such as virus, happens after your HP computer has booted to Windows.

If your HP computer has problems before Windows could boot, it is most likely a hardware problem. In facts, you can almost be certain that it is a hardware fault.

If it has issues after Windows has booted successfully, it could be either software or hardware fault. This is a little harder to tell.

Restart your computer

Restarting your computer fixes many problems!

Restart it now if you haven’t done so.

Remove then reinsert battery from your HP laptop (if possible)

This is another quick one that you should try before anything else.

Unplug the charger, look at the back of your HP laptop, see if it has a user-removable battery.

If it has, you will find 2 latches that you can slide to pop out the battery.

After the battery has been removed, hold down the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any left-over power from your HP laptop.

Reinsert the battery, press the power button once to turn it back on and see if the problem is resolved.

How to diagnose HP computer hardware

HP computers have built-in diagnostic tools.

This is a benefit of owning HP computers. HP provides built-in diagnostic tools for end-users to use.

Dell, Apple, and some Lenovo models also provide this. While Acer, ASUS and many others do not.

To access this diagnostic tools, after pressing the power button to turn on your HP computer, repeatedly press Esc key until you see a startup menu.

pressing Esc key to diagnose HP computers

Select System Diagnostics, or you could press F2 key.

HP startup menu

This is an easy, built-in general hardware diagnostic test that you can use to check on the status of hardware across your computer, like the hard drive, RAM, and video card.

If any of the parts fails the test, it means the part is faulty and needs to be replaced.

If it passes all the test, it does not mean that the parts are in working order. Keep in mind that this is free, user-friendly built-in tools provided by HP only.

You can repeat the tests multiple times to increase its accuracy. If any of the tests show a part is fault, it means the part is indeed faulty.

Reinstalling Windows

If the problem persists and you’re still unsure, reinstalling Windows (also called “Reset Windows”) could also be a great way to resolve software issues.

Just hold down the Esc key after restarting the computer to reach the startup menu, then F11 for System Recovery options. You can then choose to reset your computer there to factory settings.

If your HP computer is completely dead

In the above, I’ve covered the instance where your HP computer turns on but has trouble booting up.

If your HP computer fails to turn on, it’s completely dead completely, you won’t be able to do any of the pre-boot diagnostic as mentioned.

In this case, it’s possible that it has a faulty power supply unit (also called the charger if it’s a HP laptop), or damaged power socket (for HP laptops only), or dead motherboard.

A faulty power supply unit is generally easy to test by simply using a working power supply unit to test (if you have a spare one). Or you could also use a multimeter to test the current one.

If you don’t have a spare working charger for your HP laptop, take it to JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman asking to buy one and ask if you can quickly try it out before you buy.

While it used to be common for the power socket to be damaged in laptops, HP (and other manufacturers) have improved design and damages on power socket are now less common. It still happens, but not as frequently as it used to.

Testing the power socket is a much harder job for a normal computer user. It involves taking the laptop apart and test its voltage output, inspecting its cosmetic condition.

For this problem, it is most likely that a professional computer repairs is required. Pulling the computer apart, testing with spare parts, multimeter is beyond most regular computer user’s knowledge.

I don’t recommend you to attempt to test the power socket if you’re not experienced with this. It’s difficult and it is more likely that there is nothing wrong with the power socket.

At-home Do-It-Yourself HP computer repairs

After you’ve done diagnostic using HP’s built-in tools, you might have a better ideas about what’s wrong with your computer.

If you’re still unsure what’s wrong with your HP computer, our Blog covers more guides for you to attempt further testing and DIY repairs.

If your laptop had water spill damage, see our water damaged laptop guide instead.

Test, diagnose your HP computer:

  • Check out best tools that computer technicians use to test computers. If you have access to some of these tools, it could help you narrow down the problem.
  • How to test your computer at home yourself.
  • Tips to save your laptop after spilling water on your laptop. It may not solve the problems but can be useful.
  • Some problems don’t even need testing, see common issue that you’ll know straight away.

Repair keyboard problem:

  • Laptop keyboard issues most likely will need a new keyboard. Since HP has changed to new slim design for many laptop models, DIY at home repairs is difficult.

If your HP freezes, or show certain errors at startup:

Repairs on HP laptop not charging, not turning on:

Most of laptop repairs will require taking it apart.

You’ll need a precision screwdriver kit on Amazon.

I Fix It provides comprehensive guides on how to disassemble many computer models. There aren’t as many HP computer models on I Fix it, but worth a try.

YouTube is also an excellent source for video step by step guide on how to disassemble, troubleshoot and repair your HP laptops. Simply search for your computer model plus “screen replacement”, or “disassembly” to find relevant guides.

HP Support Community is also good source to ask questions to get answers from community members.

Keep in mind that the members are not HP employees, they do not represent HP in anyway. Don’t expect HP customer support to assist you on this online forum.

Another place to look for is HP service manual. HP provides some video service manuals on YouTube which is quite handy. You’ll find HP’s official service manual in the video. This is useful because the videos are created by HP for servicing purpose without any clickbait or marketing incentives.

DIY repairs isn’t for everyone. You need to have some technical knowledge to attempt DIY repairs.

Best places to find HP computer repair centres in Sydney

With seeking professional HP computer repair centres, you have only 2 options:

  • Repairs with the manufacturer – official HP repair centres, in this case.
  • Repairs with third-party HP PC repair centres / local repairers (eg PC computer repair shops). These third-party HP repair centres are not owned nor supervised by HP. They are independent local businesses.

Possibly a third option is asking your employer’s company IT department who may have in-house IT employees to assist you first.

If your laptop has water damages, unfortunately, HP (and all other manufacturers) cannot repair water damaged laptops. We’ll explain further below.

HP do not have any retail stores in Australia for you to visit, unlike Apple store, Microsoft and Samsung stores.

The only option for you to get repairs by HP is to send it off to one of their official HP repair service centres (if they even have one in Australia). This means turn-around time is weeks away, if not months.

According to HP website, there is no authorised HP service centre in Australia. Your only option is to call HP directly to make an enquiry. I’m not sure if they would have a repair centre for you to send to.

This is where third-party HP computer PC repair service centres can help you. It might be your only option.

There are third-party HP computer repair centres / stores just about everywhere in Sydney. Third-party local HP computer repair centres, together with their network of local suppliers, can serve customers in every corner.

Of course, our store Safemode Computer Service is one. We have been repairing HP computers, PCs, laptops since 2004.

If you’re in Sydney, you can take your laptop to a local, third-party HP computer repair centre near you, or you can take it to our store if you are nearby. Most third-party HP repair centres will have an available slots for you on the same day.

Our HP computer repair centre accepts walk-in 7 days a week. You don’t need appointment to bring in. Just come in, anytime during our business hour.

What official HP repair centres can and cannot help you with

If you decide to send your computer directly to an official HP repair centres for services, keep in mind that, HP, and most other manufacturers, only fixes a limited number of issues on your computer:

  • Restore your computer back to factory settings, which means all data will be wiped out.
  • Replace screen for your laptops.
  • Replace battery for your laptops.
  • Replace defective parts that are covered by a recall program.
  • Replace damaged parts under certain conditions (eg not damaged by water spill).

Benefits of repairing with official HP repair centres directly is that you are guaranteed to have original genuine parts installed of your computer, plus good – high quality control.

The downside is that, their repair service is very limited and time consuming. It could take weeks or months to get it repaired by HP, if it’s even possible.

I’m sorry to tell you that, more often it’s not possible to get repairs with official HP repair centres. They are manufacturers, not repairers. Repairs is simply not their main business.

For good reasons, HP will not do the followings:

  • Repair water, liquid spill damaged HP computers.
  • Repair old HP computer models (3 or 4+ year old computers).
  • Fix sticky keyboard key problem.
  • Manual removal of virus and spyware.
  • Back up or recover your data from your PC.
  • Upgrade your HP computer to make it run faster.
  • Replace parts with non-HP parts or better ones.
  • Repair on computers that had been repaired previously by a third-party technician.

In facts, it’s not just HP, all manufacturers do not provide such services. It’s not possible for them to do so, for many reasons.

Don’t waste your time seeking help from HP for the above.

It is likely that they will encourage you to purchase a new computer.

Unlike manufacturers, local third-party HP computer repair centres will repair what HP can, plus the things that HP cannot repair for you.

Because, it is in those third-party, local HP computer repairers’ best interests to repair your computer. It is within their expertise and is their main business to do so (they are not retailers nor manufacturers).

Repairs at a third-party HP computer repair centres often will cost you less than at manufacturers as well.

Local third-party HP computer repair centres have much lower overheads hence they can provide repairs at a much lower price point.

How much does it cost to repair my HP computer PC?

The price varies depending the type of repair, make and model of your HP computer. There is no ball-park figure nor one-size-fit-all.

You will find that most (if not all) HP computer repair centres, including official HP and third-party ones, do not give quotes without first checking your computer, except obvious issues such as battery or screen replacement.

This is common for many reasons:

  • No HP repair centres employ 100% technicians. Phone calls may be answered by reception, or non-technical staff.
  • Inconsistent prices: prices change as suppliers change prices, market price changes.
  • Any prices without written form cannot be tracked.
  • Giving prices without seeing the computer often leads to incorrect prices and unhappy customer experience.
  • It will take significant time to diagnose and quote over the phone. The repair technicians need to focus on doing repairs instead of answering phone calls.

Since official HP repair centres do not disclose their repair prices to the public, I cannot give guidelines on how much official HP repair centres would charge for their repair services (or if they are willing to provide repairs).

For third-party HP repair centres, generally if your computer has software issue (eg virus), it may cost $50, $100 – $200.

Some HP repairers charge by hourly rate hence it varies depending how many hours you will take up with the technician. The more questions you have, the more work you have to get done, the more expensive it’ll get.

If your computer has hardware issue (i.e. hard drive failure, broken screen), it will involve cost for spare part plus labour, which price may vary $150-$1,000+.

I know, it’s a big range, but the price can vary significantly indeed. For most HP home computers though, it’s likely that it will be a few hundreds or less (AUD).

As a general rule, the more expensive your computer is, the more expensive it may cost to fix.

For example, the HP 13-aw0059TU laptop has stunning touch screen display. It’s a top end model. If you breaks this laptop screen, it will cost you more than $1,000 to replace.

While a regular HP home laptop screen repairs will cost $200 to $500 only.

How long does it take to repair my HP computer?

This varies depending on the problem, spare part availability and which computer repairer you use (official HP repair centres, or third-party HP computer repair centres).

HP, the manufacturer, may need a few weeks, or even months, to complete a repairs because they do not have retail stores.

You’ll need to send your computer to their repair service center or schedule a technician to come onsite.

While many third-party, local HP computer PC repair centres can provide same day repairs.

This is one of the biggest advantages third-party HP computer repairers have.

For our store – Safemode Computer Service, we commence testing and repairs on the same day.

Turn-around time is typically same day, next day, or 3-5 business days, or sometimes longer for major repairs.

Generally after you’ve approved our quote, we will commence the work immediately.

Repairing computers often requires spare parts. While most computer repairers will stock common parts to facilitate repair process, it’s not possible to have all parts in stock.

If a part needs to be ordered in, standard delivery time is 2-5 business days within Australia (subject to stock availability at suppliers).

Data backup, or data recovery process is time consuming, which affects turn-around time. Having backup of your data helps reduce turn-around time for repairs.

* Business days are Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.

Our HP computer repairs service centres offer you these guarantees

Our computer PC repair services come with 90 day warranty, plus No fix no fee guarantee. See our full guarantee statement here.

Many spare parts come with 1 year, 3 year, or 5 year manufacturer warranty such as new hard drives, RAM, video card, CD drive, Power Supply Unit (PSU), motherboard, battery, charger etc.

You will receive this 1 year warranty for the spare part if it is supplied as part of the repair process.

We also give an upfront, no-obligation Free quote before carrying out the work.

What if there is something else wrong with my HP computer?

At Safemode Computer Service, we will repair other components for Free of charge if it is within reasonable cost.

After the initial inspection, we will give you a quote to repair your HP computer PC.

If there are other small components that were found damaged and not covered in the original quote, we will replace them for Free.

If the damaged components are expensive and will alter the price significantly, we will advise you early and give you the option to either pay the difference to repair the extra components, or to cancel the repairs and pay nothing.

Manufacturers, including HP, and major retailers will not provide this offer because they do not offer No fix No fee policy like ours, plus they do not have the expertise to repair the additional unexpected damages.

After your HP computer has been repaired by us successfully, it will come with 90 day guarantee, plus No fix no fee guarantee. See our full guarantee statement here.

What’s involved in a HP computer repairs process?

To put this simple, a HP computer repair process involves identifying and replacing faulty part(s) inside the computer.

Computers of any make are expected to last 3-4 years then it will need to be fixed. If you’re unlucky, it will only last 1-2 years. Then, a part needs to be replaced to get it back to working order again.

Your data may be at risk. It’s recommended to keep regular backup of your data to prevent data loss when your computer breaks down.

How to book for repairs for my HP computer?

Don’t flood your head with laptop liquid spill repair hacks

Simple accidents can sometimes cause big problems. Liquid damage can kill your laptop quickly, so you’ll need to act fast to protect it. Whether you’ve spilled your coffee over it, or you’ve left it in the bathroom during a hot shower, liquid damage needs to be dealt with immediately and carefully.

Electronics are extremely prone to liquid damage, even those with some sort of plastic or rubber protective layer. We can’t all own military-grade Toughbooks that are water-proof and incredibly resilient to damage, as they are not sold at consumer prices.

So, having an idea about how to deal with accidental liquid damage on your laptop can help you solve the problem in no time. Otherwise, you’d be desperately looking for answers on the internet while your laptop suffers more damage over this wasted time (you might be doing this now, but we don’t judge👀) . In this guide, we’ll be looking at what you should do when these accidents happen, how liquid spills can hurt different parts of your laptop, and how you can fix liquid damage and how professional computer repairers can help you.

Types of liquid damage

Spilling liquid onto your laptop can result in different levels of damage, depending on the type of liquid and the amount of it. It might just be a splash from a drink, or your laptop could’ve been left out in the rain. Any type of liquid could also cause damage to your laptop, from water to vomit, even. By knowing the culprit behind your laptop damage, we can find the right repair solution for it.

The worst liquids to spill on a laptop

Spilt red wine

From experience, we understand how different liquids can create all kinds of damage across your device. Of course, vomit would be the first thing that comes to mind when we’re thinking about the worst kind of liquid damage. But more commonly, liquids that are hard to clean off and can corrode components are typically hard to deal with.

The thought of making this list is bizarre, but we’ve put together a list of types of common culprits of liquid damage, from the most manageable to hardest to repair. It goes from water, coffee, soft drinks or juice, wine, sea water and beer. Water, coffee, or tea, does the least damage to internal components, compared to other sugary or corrosive liquids. Water eventually evaporates and does not leave anything behind that needs cleaning. In this case, your laptop may just survive if you are lucky.

Sugary liquids like soft drinks, juice, and red wine are hard to clean off the keyboard and other parts of the laptop. Even when it has dried off, the sugar makes everything sticky and hard to clean.

Sea water and beer are also known to corrode parts of the keyboard and motherboard. The motherboard is composed of many small connecting points and circuits that are susceptible to liquid damage. We know it’s hard to prevent accidents from happening, but knowing how much damage different liquids can make might just help you be more careful around your drinks. Next time you have a beer with your mates, best to stay away from your computers.

What not to do when you’ve gotten your laptop wet

First of all, don’t panic. Panicking usually leads to doing unwanted things in hopes of saving the laptop. Unprofessional treatment of liquid damage can lead to further damage that we surely don’t want.

Some people might look to certain hacks to save their laptop, like submerging the laptop in a tub of uncooked rice. That doesn’t work for the complex components of a laptop, and will even bring dust or starch into the device. Though rice does absorb liquid, we believe many of these liquid spill repair hacks are mostly click-bait. Rice cannot undo what’s already damaged, and the leftover rice in your laptop may even cause more damage to the fan.

Using a hair dryer to dry out the laptop is also something we don’t recommend. The heat generated by the hair dryer can melt the keyboard or warp the motherboard. This makes repairing the laptop from liquid damage even harder. Make sure you’re not making things worse for your laptop, as more unwanted damages could cost you more.

What to do when you’ve gotten your laptop wet

While you might want to clean the liquid off immediately, the first thing you should be doing is to turn it off. Just shut it down by holding down the power button, don’t worry about properly shutting it down. If your working surface is still wet, you should also remove the laptop from the area.

Then you’ll need to disconnect it from power. Disconnect the laptop from the charging cable and remove the battery if you can. Otherwise, just leave it as it is, unplugged. USB drives or other peripherals that can draw power from your laptop should also be unplugged. Keeping yourself safe from a wet electronic device is also something to be aware of. You may also try wiping off any liquid on the laptop’s surface with a lint-free cloth. After this quick damage control process, taking the laptop to a repair shop might also be a good next step.

Certain models of Lenovo laptops have built-in mechanisms that act as a drainage system for liquid spills. Again, the best thing to do with laptop liquid spills is to remove it from its power and get it repaired as soon as you can.

What liquid spills do to your laptop

When liquid gets on your laptop, it can get to different parts of the system. This depends on how much liquid and how long the liquid has been on there.

Keyboard

Laptop keyboard with cursor

The keyboard is usually the first to go once liquid gets in. It’ll have to be replaced once it’s damaged. Sometimes it may work after it’s been wet, but the keys are still hard to clean individually. They keys may feel sticky and hard to type with, and trying to clean them individually might break the keys as well.

This is true especially for thin keyboards like Apple’s butterfly keyboard on Macbook Airs and Macbook Pros. Trying to clean the butterfly keyboard on its own might damage other components on the Macbook. So it might be a good idea to get the whole keyboard replaced by a professional.

Motherboard

Motherboard, or logic board

The motherboard, or logic board for Apple computers, spans across the laptop as its main circuit board. It is located right under the keyboard, where liquids can seep through. This makes it easy for liquids to destroy any part of the motherboard.

Other than overheating, liquid spills are one of the main factors of motherboard failure. When any part of the motherboard is damaged by liquids, it’s likely that your laptop won’t turn on at all. The motherboard is the nerve centre of the computer, so when it is down, other components can’t communicate with each other. Nothing else will work when this happens.

Even if your laptop does turn on and seem to work properly, residue left behind from the spill can create problems for later. These might be sticky sugary residue, or minerals that can escalate corrosion damage on the motherboard. So just because your laptop still works, preventable problems can arise if not dealt with.

Motherboard failures are known to be very difficult to repair as it involves careful navigation among delicate components. Learn more about motherboard failure and how to test for them in our guide to motherboard repairs here.

Hard drive / SSD

Liquid spills can also cause damage if it gets to the hard drive. Whether it is a traditional spinning hard drive or a solid-state drive, once it gets wet, the drive will die immediately. Hard drives store data electronically either on disks or memory chips. When these electronics are damaged, data loss is almost certain in this case.

This is why we always encourage keeping data backups. As data recovery from liquid damage can be very expensive and not worth it, having a backup can keep your data safe from accidents that you can’t prevent.

While keyboard and motherboard failures are pretty apparent after liquid damage, you can’t really test your storage drive when your laptop doesn’t turn on. Should you want to test your hard drive for failure after liquid damage, you can try taking it out and testing it on a desktop computer. Follow our guide to testing a hard drive for issues here.

Battery

Lithium batteries are vulnerable to liquid damage. Even with its outer layer as protection, it can only withstand a certain amount of liquid. You’ll need to replace the damaged battery if any liquid gets inside. Batteries that have been tainted by liquids are extremely unsafe to use.

This is why you have to act quickly to remove the power source from the laptop after any liquid spills. The battery’s outer layer can usually be wiped dry if only a small amount is spilled on the laptop.

What to do when your laptop doesn’t turn on after you’ve spilt on it

If you’ve done everything in your power to save your laptop from further damage, it still might not turn on. It might be time to get help from a professional technician. While a brand authorised service provider might be your first choice to get a free repair while your warranty is still valid, they might not be able to help with liquid damage. Service providers like Apple do not usually offer motherboard replacements after a liquid spill. This sort of accidental damage might not be covered under warranty either.

Let’s face it, often times your warranty will not be able to cover liquid spill damages. If liquid traces are found inside your laptop, your warranty cover has been voided. This may also include liquid damage that you aren’t even aware of.

Manufacturers like Apple use built-in indicators to tell whether liquid has gotten inside the computer. This is a small round white pad that turns red when it comes into contact with any liquid. A small amount of water would make it turn pink. If the indicator has turned red, this means that there was a large amount of water inside the computer. This is how Apple Support can detect the problem with a simple indicator test.

If your device is under Apple Care, you might be able to get repairs done at discounted prices. The good news is that you may be covered by insurance if your policy covers accidental damages. That said, always check with your insurers first.

The other thing you can do, is to bring it to a third party repair service like us, at Safemode Computer Service 👍. We can offer expert liquid spill repairs on your laptop, and replace damaged parts like the keyboard and motherboard.

How do we fix a laptop damaged by liquid spills?

computer repair simulation with model figures

With a dead laptop, we usually can’t test everything on your laptop, even after a motherboard replacement. We can assess the damage from looking at the liquid residue on the keyboard and motherboard, and attempt repairs and replacements on parts of the motherboard. We also replace small components on the laptop, just to make sure we’ve covered all our bases. If it does need a complete replacement of the motherboard and keyboard, we can do that as well.

Liquid spill damage can be unpredictable, and each repair process is different. This depends on the type of liquid and how much damage it has caused on the system. With that said, the repair process can differ in duration and scope of repair. This also affects the cost of each liquid spill damage repair.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

This HP Pavilion DV6 laptop has been over-heating and recently has broken its bottom casing at the left hand side. Due to the damage, the laptop lid can no longer close.

How To Repair Your Laptop

Since the bottom casing is broken, we will need to replace it. This bottom casing is underneath the laptop’s motherboard, fan, heatsink, screen and everything else so this job won’t be as easy as it sounds like. Get ready to disassemble the whole laptop to replace the bottom cover.

Let’s first remove the laptop keyboard.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Disconnect all ribbon cables that you see here then remove the laptop keyboard cover.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

The laptop display panel is attached onto the bottom casing, we will need to take the display unit apart from the bottom casing too.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Now we would have the laptop motherboard in its bottom casing left. Let’s remove the motherboard.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Now the motherboard is removed, take a look at the fan and heatsink units and you’ll see why the bottom casing went broken. We’ll need to remove the fan and heatsink from the board itself, then detach the fan from its heatsink.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

The heatsink is completely covered in dust, there is no gap for the heat to go out, this caused over-heating problems with this HP DV6 laptop.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Using a computer brush, air duster and cleaning oil to clean out the heatsink and the laptop fan. This will stop the laptop from over-heating.

To make it even better, we will use electrical tape to wrap around the gap between the heatsink and the fan to stop dust getting into the heatsink.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Now the cleaning is done, we’ll move on to replacing the bottom casing. Let’s take a look at the damaged bottom case.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

The left side of the bottom cover is damaged, thus it couldn’t give support to the display panel, which led to the facts that the laptop could not close.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Now make sure to remove the remaining parts from the bottom case too, this includes USB ports, ribbon cables, DC power jack, etc. We will need to fit all of these small parts onto the new bottom cover.

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

HP Pavilion DV6 3000 Laptop Repairs

Once that’s done, we are now ready to take out a new bottom cover and reassemble the laptop in reversed order of this guide.

This process should be easier than taking the laptop apart since you’re already familiar with the build of this laptop.

With the new bottom casing, the laptop will now be able to close normally.

Over-heating problem is also fixed for good after we have cleaned out the dust.

Reported Problems:

One of the biggest challenges we have ever done! An Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 year 2011 laptop was booked in for repairs. The laptop was soaked with water (lots of water, inside a bag) and was no longer booting up.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

The Repairs:

This laptop may have suffered multiple water damages. The mission of rescuing this laptop won’t be an easy ride. More than one part will need to be replaced. For this laptop, after extensive testings, we have determined that its logic board, heatsink and screen need to be replaced.

We first have a look inside this laptop.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Now let’s remove the logic board from the computer. Make sure to disconnect other parts first.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Now we can have a look at the logic board.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Testing has confirmed that this logic board is damaged and will need to be replaced. We can now take out a replacement logic board and replace it.

Here we encounter an unexpected problem. This logic board, for some reason, is different from common MacBook Pro A1278 logic boards, it’s nowhere to be found in the market.

Unable to use the common A1278 logic board, we talked to our suppliers to source for an alternative Apple logic board with the same specs.

Now we have the replacement board, installing it brought up another issue. The board’s heatsink was not compatible and had to be replaced too.

Now we have replaced both logic board and heatsink for this MacBook Pro laptop, next is to replace the screen.

Replacing screen for Apple MacBook Pro unibody laptops is never an easy job. The screen is behind a glass cover, replacing the screen means we need to remove the glass cover first. The glass cover is fragile and may break when you attempt to take it out.

Heat up the glass cover with a heat gun and remove it with a suction cup.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Carefully remove the glass cover and make sure not to damage or burn anything underneath.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Have a replacement glass cover in case you broke the original one. Always wear gloves and safety glasses to avoid injuries.

Now we should have access to the screen.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch A1278 2011 Logic Board Screen Heatsink Repairs

Let’s replace it with a new screen.

With new screen, new logic board, new heatsink installed, the rest of this job is simpler. Reassemble the laptop and test it out.

The laptop turns on fine and booted into Mac OS X normally. Try out other functions such as wireless, keyboard, touchpad to make sure it’s working properly.

All are working perfectly as they should be. Mission accomplished.

An Apple MacBook Air laptop was booked in with keyboard problem.

Apple MacBook Air Keyboard Repairs     Apple MacBook Air Keyboard Repairs

Owner of the laptop spilled water onto the keyboard of the Mac, since then the keyboard didn’t work properly. Random letters came up when typing. The laptop booted up straight into Safe Boot as if Shift key was engaged.

Apple MacBook Air Keyboard Repairs     Apple MacBook Air Keyboard Repairs

On this Apple MacBook Air, its keyboard unit is integrated into its aluminium casing. The keyboard is connected to touchpad unit, and touchpad unit is, via a ribbon cable, connected to logic board. Thus the problem may lie within any of these units. Replacing the keyboard unit does NOT guarantee to fix the problem. We have come across a different job (same Apple MacBook Air that had water spilt on) that had the same problem but due to both damaged keyboard and touchpad (demonstrated in another post).

The Repairs:

Using available spare parts and a number of tests, we have determined that the laptop keyboard needs to be replaced.

Let’s first have a look at its bottom cover.

After a number of testing, we have determined that both of the laptop screen and LED cable must be replaced. Well preparation is the key for this job because this one will require a lot of time, skills and experience. Available spare parts are essential to complete the job right and important for testing.

Let’s remove the laptop bottom cover.

Now we’ve got the display panel removed on this MacBook Pro laptop. The most difficult part is not yet to start.

Using a heat-gun, we’ll need to heat up the glass cover on the laptop display, take extra precaution here since over-heating it will cause damages on other parts inside the display. Not enough heat on the other hands will not help.

With a suction-cup, lift the glass cover up separating it from the display. Be careful here because the glass cover is fragile and can break easily if you use too much force. This process sometimes may break the glass cover so always make sure to have a replacement one in case.

Check the screen details, make sure that you have a compatible screen and LED cable. Install the new screen and connect new LED cable.

Follow the same steps in reversed order to reassemble the laptop.

Now we’ve got an Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch A1278 laptop with new screen, new glass cover (if replaced), new LED cable, with internal fan cleaned. Let’s test it out.
